Sun spots are flat brown or white spots on skin which has suffered chronic exposure to sunlight. Although they form due to the effects of excessive sunlight on melanin production, they are harmless. However, individuals may still wish to have them removed for cosmetic reasons.

What are the Types?

Sun spots are simply classified by their color:

  • Brown sun spots or lentigines, which result from an increase in the number of melanocytes (cells responsible for producing melanin) present in sun-exposed skin

  • White sun spots or idiopathic guttate hypomelanosis, which appear when melanin is destroyed from years of excessive sun exposure
