Skin Disease

Skin diseases usually have low mortality rates, but they can serve as indicators of underlying medical conditions and  may also lead to health complications if left untreated.

Most Common Skin Diseases

While there are numerous skin diseases, some prevalent types in the Philippines include:

  • Warts. These small growths on the skin result from a human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and are characterized by a rough, grainy texture. Some of them also have small black spots, which are tiny blood vessels that have grown into the warts. Although they are not benign, they can spread by contact and appear anywhere on the body. HPV infections are also associated with cancer of the cervix, mouth, throat, and genital regions.

  • Eczema. This chronic and genetic skin condition can cause dryness, itching, and redness on any part of the body. Affected skin becomes inflamed and cracked, as well as more susceptible to cold sores and warts. Blistering and weeping occurs in some cases.

  • Hair and Nail Problems. These include hair loss and nail discoloration. Aside from being unsightly, they can point to underlying health conditions. Certain types of nail discoloration are symptoms of particular diseases while brittle hair often indicates broader health issues.
